Nemo the file manager

With the latest Nautilus(3.6) being default in Ubuntu, and its lake of features does not amuse you, you might be looking for other options, well, look no further, cause here is Nemo - (a nautilus fork)

Nemo the file manager

Cinnamon is a user interface, and just like its file-manager nemo, it is also a fork, a fork from gnome-shell(gnome-shell did not fit the design goals the team had in mind for Linux Mint, but there were initially no available alternatives.) developed by and for linux-mint.

Here are some of the features that are currently available(for a more complete list see Nemo)

Features

  • All the features Nautilus 3.4 had and which are missing in Nautilus 3.6 (all desktop icons, compact view, etc..)
  • Open in terminal (this is part of Nemo itself)
  • Open as root (this is also part of Nemo)
  • File operations progress information (when you copy/move files you can see the percentage and info about the operation on the window title and so also in your window list)
  • Proper GTK bookmarks management
  • Full navigation options (back, forward, up, refresh)
  • Ability to toggle between the path entry and the path breadcrumb widgets
  • A lot more configuration options

Among others there is also an option to customize your toolbar

Nemo the file-manager

To install the latest nemo - at the time of writing 1.8.2 - copy/paste the following code one by one in your gnome-terminal.

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
  2. sudo apt-get update
  3. sudo apt-get install nemo nemo-fileroller

If you want the bleeding edge - unstable - version of nemo... copy/paste the following code one by one in your gnome-terminal.

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
  2. sudo apt-get update
  3. sudo apt-get install nemo nemo-fileroller

After installation nemo writes your desktop now. If for some reason you like nautilus for writing desktops, run these command that un-hides nemo from the startup applications(It's hidden by default) sudo sed -i 's/NoDisplay=true/NoDisplay=false/g' /etc/xdg/autostart/nemo-autostart.desktop open dash, start the startup application, and un-check nemo.

Other plug-ins to install one might find useful:

  • nemo-fileroller - File Roller integration for Nemo
  • nemo-dropbox - Dropbox integration for Nemo
  • nemo-compare - Context menu comparison extension for Nemo file manager
  • nemo-seahorse - seahorse plugins and utilities for encryption in GNOME
  • nemo-share - Nemo extension to share folder using Samba
  • nemo-pastebin - Nemo extension to send files to a pastebin

Have fun!
